Services

Song Production
Full song production includes recording, mixing and mastering (if wanted), as well as helping with arrangements, performances, and additional instrumentation if wanted.

Full song production may include tracking at separate locations if the budget allows and we think that the project would benefit from it

I charge a flat fee for song production, so that as much as is needed can be spent to get the project to completion without worrying over excess time being spent.
Recording
At very reasonable and affordable rates, this is the perfect studio to get your band off the ground with your first single or EP.

The Shed Studio is setup primarily for recording rock bands, but is not exclusive to that genre.
Mixing
Mixing is done to turn a collection of tracks and parts into one cohesive sound. Without mixing, instruments can sound out of place, and the song will sound rough and unfinished.
Rates

Production

I charge a flat fee of 300$ per song. The reason this is a flat fee is in order to allow projects to take as much time as is needed. Producing within a set time limit can be counter-productive to creativity and expression, and can limit the potential of a project. As much I can, I want to avoid a project missing out on what could be due to budgetary constraints, or a slow day in the studio that gets things behind schedule. A flat rate makes things as simple as possible for the artist and allows things to take as much time as needed within reason.

However, hourly/daily rates are also provided if the artist prefers to go that route, or only wants recording done. If, for example, you want to just come in for a day and record 10 songs live off the floor, the daily rate probably makes more sense for you.

Recording

Recording is done at a day rate or half day rate. Both include an engineer present for the duration of the session

Full day: 350$, 9 hours including breaks
Half day: 200$, 4 hours

Mixing

Mixing and mastering rates will be different for every song. If a song is expected to take longer and more effort to mix/master, it will be quoted higher.

Mixing: 100-250$ depending on the length and complexity of the track with a max of 5 revisions
Mastering: 30-50$ depending on the length and complexity of the track with a max of 5 revisions

About Me

I am Ellis Frank, the engineer for the Shed. I've been playing guitar since I was quite young, and also play bass, drums, and some keyboards. I grew up in a very musical family. My dad is a member of Spirit of the West, and because of that I've been lucky enough to share the stage with them, members of the Barenaked Ladies, The Odds, and Sarah McLaughlin.

I had my first introduction to recording at 10, recording multi track covers of my favourite songs on my iPad. My first experience in a professional studio was sitting in on recording sessions my dad managed. I started out by recording demos for the various bands I've been a part of, and recording my own music. Wanting to elevate my skills in order to record my own music at a higher level, I started taking audio production lessons with Justin Lapointe of Barnhouse Sound Productions. Through doing those lessons I learnt that I really love audio production and wanted to turn it into a career. I started to record some local bands in a spare out-building my family didn't know what to do with, and offering mixing services. This turned into the Shed recording studio. As I was doing that, I became an intern at Barnhouse Sound Productions, getting to sit in on real sessions. I helped setting up mics and patches, repairing instruments, and got to learn much more about how a proper recording session is run. At the Shed, my skills continued to grow with every new project that I worked on. Through all of this, I've developed a strong sense of how to run a recording session and how to produce a song from start to finish. The most important part of the job is working with people, and trying to foster an environment where everyone feels free to truly express themselves.

Some of my musical influences are Radiohead, IDLES, Pixies, Nirvana, the Microphones, Black Midi, Black Country New Road, Queens of the Stone Age, and Squid. I play in two local bands, Dreamworld Panic, and Baba Chaka, both of which are active members of the local music scene.

I love the Victoria underground music scene, and I hope I can be a part of that and contribute to it with my skills and services.
